What a ride this book took me on! The plot of this was unique (to me) and it unfolded like a slow train wreck of a mystery where you could feel it falling apart, but you can’t see all the ways it is crumbling until it is too late. The premise is centered on a family in the UK who wins the lottery playing the same numbers they have played for 15 years. The snag is that until exactly one week prior they had been playing those numbers in a syndicate with two other families and everyone is tight-lipped about why they split apart.
As the mystery unfolds, the three family’s secrets become exposed, and the greed and wealth morph some people into darker versions of themselves. The protagonist is Lexi; a mother, wife, and social worker in the family who wins the lottery. The inner battle she faces as the people around her settle into their wealthier lifestyle, and the way she processes the relationships around her, provides the perspective the reader sees. I’d classify this as mysterious and at times suspenseful, but not a thriller. It’s well done and was a page-turner for me. This won’t be my last from the author.
