Monday’s Not Coming Book Review

Monday’s Not Coming by Tiffany D. Jackson was both tense and heartbreaking, which I am coming to find is a specialty of the author.  In this novel we meet Claudia, a teenager in Washington D.C. who is trying to find her missing friend, Monday.  The trouble is, only Claudia is taking her absence seriously and she’s having trouble piecing it all together.

The story is told in two timelines, the before and the after of Monday’s disappearance.  As a reader, I never felt like I relaxed in this book.  I was always trying to solve the puzzle along with Claudia and always worried about where she was going and what she was doing.  The sense of danger is a low-grade buzz throughout the whole book – and in Claudia’s mind.

Despite feeling from page one that nothing good was coming my way, I was still surprised and crushed at the end of this book.  There was a one-two punch that just broke my heart.  But I guess that’s why I read Jackson’s books – to be invested in a plot that feels way too plausible in real-life, and have her pummel me with the truth in the end.

I’m nearly done with her backlist and am going to be in a real antsy place while I wait for her next thriller to come out in September.  If you enjoyed her book Grown, my personal favorite, this is very similar in mood and style with a smidge more YA feel.
