Long Shot Book Review

Long Shot by Kennedy Ryan was my first read in her backlist and it won’t be my last. After reading an advanced copy of her upcoming novel, Before I Let Go, I knew her writing was for me. I’ve received a few recommendations from friends on their favorite backlist reads (Reel, Grip Series, Hoops Series) and I started with the first in Hoops.

Long Shot is a deep and challenging look at relationships and love. If you look at just the book description it sounds like a love triangle set in the NBA, and at it’s core it is, but it’s also a brutally intimate look at domestic abuse and violence. There is definitely healthy love and romance with sprinkles of spice, but this book is 460 pages… it spares no expense in character development and plot lines. You get the full experience.

Personally, I love this type of story. It’s what drew me to the author in the first place – she writes her stories in a way that you experience the character deeply. If you are also someone who likes your contemporary romance on the deep side of things and you’ve checked warnings, this is an excellent choice.

I’m going to jump to book 3 in the series next, Hook Shot, because I have heard so many good things about it and they are each standalone books tied together by basketball. I love that kind of freedom in reading a backlist series.
