A Flicker in the Dark Book Review
A Flicker in the Dark by Stacy Willingham was a solid debut suspense novel that kept me guessing. In it we meet Chloe, whose dad was convicted of murdering six teenage girls during her childhood.
As a reader, we switch between present day Chloe in her adulthood and younger Chloe. In present day, she is engaged to be married and trying to unpack a new teenage disappearance that feels eerily like those of her earlier days.
About halfway into the book I was still unsure of the twists and had a few guesses; one was correct but not obvious. At the end I had all the answers, and it was mostly satisfactory, with a few loose ends I would have liked to understand better.
There are two characters that were so frustrating – their poor choices made me want to scream (DM me if you’ve read it!). Nonetheless, it’s solid mystery and I’d recommend it to anyone who enjoys dual timelines, copycat crimes, unreliable narrators, and a race against the clock. I’ll definitely check out her next novel in 2023.
